Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. She first appeared on TV in the role of Jackie Harris, a character which was played by her mother in the ABC show Roseanne. The family did not allow her to act until she turned an adult due to the negative effects that stress could have on their daughter. Perry stated that she felt timid to perform at the age of 16, but she began doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to build relationships after her transfer from Boston University. Perry made her debut as an actress in New York after graduation, getting small roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry go back to California and pursue a career as a theater actress. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. Perry was in the show with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. Then in 2017, she appeared as a recurring role on The ABC film Scandal which starred her father. In the same year, she portrayed a younger version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a youthful version. It was her first role despite her close family connection to the character.
