Perry is the daughter of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. In her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne (in flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first television roles. She was not allowed to act by her parents until she reached an adulthood stage, because they feared the pressure it would bring. Perry admitted she was nervous to be an actor during high school, but started doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocating to New York in search of acting roles on television. Perry was able to land small roles in television shows, such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. In the end, the feeling of homelessness led her to California in search of theater jobs. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway together with her mom. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie with the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. She had a regular role for the ABC politics drama Scandal with her dad. This year, she got a role as a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young version of her mother's role. The actress was chosen for the role despite her close connections to the character's family.
